States With No Income Tax

Nine states are commonly described as having no broad individual income tax on wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.

What zero state income tax means

A Texas or Florida wage earner generally has no state individual income tax line. Federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare still apply. Other state or local taxes can affect the cost of living.

Where the nuance appears

Washington has a capital gains excise tax on some gains, which is different from tax on ordinary wages. New Hampshire’s former tax on interest and dividends was repealed for periods beginning in 2025. State residence and work location still matter.

Compare after-tax income carefully

A no-income-tax state can produce a larger paycheck at the same salary, but housing, sales tax, insurance and benefits can offset the difference. Start with net wages, then compare living costs separately.

Use the numbers: Open the paycheck calculator to apply these ideas to a salary or hourly rate. The result is an annualized estimate; your employer’s actual withholding can differ.
