What Is a W-4 and How Withholding Works

Form W-4 tells your employer how to calculate federal income tax withholding. It changes the timing of tax payments, not the tax brackets themselves.

Information on the form

Filing status, multiple jobs, dependents, other income, deductions and extra withholding can all change the amount taken from a paycheck. A blank or outdated form may produce a surprise at filing time.

Withholding versus annual tax

Your employer uses payroll tables and your W-4 to withhold during the year. Your tax return later reconciles payments with actual annual liability. A refund usually means more was paid through the year than ultimately owed.

Use the estimate responsibly

PaystubLedger models an annualized standard-deduction baseline. It does not read your W-4 or reproduce IRS Publication 15-T payroll tables. Compare our annual estimate with your actual YTD withholding and use the IRS estimator for adjustments.

Use the numbers: Open the paycheck calculator to apply these ideas to a salary or hourly rate. The result is an annualized estimate; your employer’s actual withholding can differ.
