What this rate means for planning
Higher hourly pay does not imply every extra dollar is taxed at the top marginal rate. The Social Security wage cap and state-specific rules can also change the shape of the deduction ledger.
Model bonuses and variable hours separately. If your annual wages cross the Social Security cap, a simple flat deduction percentage will mislead.
What about take-home pay?
The table is gross pay. Federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, state income tax and benefits can reduce the actual paycheck. A job with unpaid weeks changes the annual total: at $50.00 an hour and 40 hours per week, each unpaid week removes $2,000.00 of gross pay. Use the hourly paycheck calculator to enter your state, filing status and actual paid weeks.
